Civitavecchia and beyond

Day 94 - just passed between Corsica and Sardinia on way to last port of call - Barcelona. Thoroughly enjoyed the port town of Civitavecchia - photos are posted!

Around the world we’ve heard concerns about the economy and hopes for Obama’s success. I hear at home people are fighting against that with tea parties, et al. Isn’t it obvious that we have a global crisis and need to pull together?

I shall miss the world perspective gained from talking with people and from the media available around the world. Whether it’s storms, riots, piracy, or unemployment, there is much NOT covered in US media. Isolated by vast oceans we further isolate ourselves.

Hi Lois,
I've been in Monterrey, Mexico for much of the last 2 weeks and just getting caught up with all the new photos posted since Petra. You got some terrific photos of the Treasury and surrounding areas in Jordan. Also, great shots of Ephesus and the Acropolis. This will certainly be a trip to remember for the rest of your life.

I must say, as others have also commented, that I have thoroughly enjoyed following your voyage around the world on the blog and the photo gallery. While not quite as exciting as actually being on board the QV, it's the next best thing.

As someone who has done quite a bit of world travel myself, your writeups have been very educational and I've learned a heck of a lot that I didn't know about many out of the way places that I've never visited.

I especially appreciated your political perspectives on how the rest of the world views Barack Obama. Seems like the whole world views Obama favorably, yet in this country the Republicans are doing everything in their power to bring him down.

There were a lot of right-wing bloggers who were actually disappointed that the hostage rescue operation last weekend by the Navy Seals was a success. Limbaugh and others were hoping for a disaster just to make Obama look bad. To wish for loss of human life just to advance your political agenda is pathological, in my opinion. These people have no morals or ethics.

From what I've seen so far, I think Obama is doing a terrific job. Even former Secretary of State, James Baker, praised Obama's foreign policy initiatives, i.e. talking to our enemies, and expressed very high regard for Hillary Clinton. Coming from James Baker, that's really saying something.

Obama's trip to Europe and Turkey was a huge success. It was a sight to behold watching a sitting U.S. president holding town hall meetings throughout the countries he visited. In three short months, Obama has already made great progress repairing the damage to our image throughout the world caused by the Bush-Cheney "our way or the highway" foreign policy.

On the domestic front, it looks like we may have turned the corner on the economy. A lot is still riding on the success of the bank rescue plan.

The right-wingers in Lancaster County are holding their tea party in Musser Park today from 4:00 until 10:00 PM. It looks like the weather is not going to cooperate with them. They are calling for heavy rain all afternoon and this evening.

Well, in a little less than 12 days you'll be back in the good old USA. Enjoy the rest of your voyage.

Happy sailing,
Dan

P.S. Thanks for the post card from Phuket, Thailand. I just received it late last week.
